Book Review: The Ghost by Robert Harris 04/04/2010

The Ghost by Robert Harris is another great novel from the master of the historical fiction.  Set in the present day and told in the first peson, our story began with a retelling of the mysterious death of Mike McAra, the first ghostwriter working on the memoirs of former British PM, Adam Lang.  Now enter our protagonist, who was then commissioned to complete the unfinished memoirs.  Set in Martha’s Vineyard during the winter time, the place was desolate and provided the perfect backdrop for the impending mystery.

I love the part where Adam Lang and The Ghost first started working on the memoirs.  The dialogue was crisp and I can just imagine Pierce Brosnan conversing with Ewan McGregor.  In my mind, I even read their lines with a British accent.  Some of the best parts of the novel involved conversations between the two.  Adam Lang was later revealed to be accused of collaborating with the CIA in handing over several suspected territorists for torture.  Remember, this was post-9/11 and paranoia ran high and the War on Terror was just starting to escalate.

Just discovered Volk’s Game, the debut novel from Brent Ghelfi at the P99 Sale at National Bookstore, SM North EDSA.

According to Amazon.com, this book is about:

Former attorney Ghelfi’s impressive debut introduces a compelling antihero, Alekei “Volk” Volkovoy. A brutal killer maimed in Russia’s war against Chechnya, Volk leads two lives—one as a powerful gangster with a hand in virtually all underworld rackets, the other as a covert military operative. When Volk gets the chance to steal a previously unknown Da Vinci painting, Leda and the Swan, which has been concealed beneath another painting in a St. Petersburg museum, Volk enlists the aid of Valya, a beautiful assassin, in plotting the theft. After an ostensible ally sabotages the operation, Volk seeks vengeance. The twists and turns accumulate at an almost dizzying pace, building to a satisfactory resolution. Frederick Forysth fans will appreciate the crisp writing. This thriller could mark the start of a successful long-running series.

Seems cool to me!  Another potential great series to follow…

When I saw David Morrell’s book Scavenger, I thought that the name sounded familiar.  Then when I checked the inside pages I was surprised to learn that he is the author of First Blood, the novel where Stallone’s movie was based from.  Now, that got me interested!

I have long wanted to read a Neal Stephenson novel, but somehow they prove to be elusive.  Some time ago, I found a Necronomicon hardback at Books for Less in SM Mall of Asia.  But it was so voluminous and expensive that I didn’t buy it.  Earlier, I also found an equally bulky hardback of Volume III of The Baroque Cycle — The System of the World at Book Sale, SM Fairview.

But now, I found another Neal Stephenson book at Book Sale, Alphaland.  It’s a paperback of Volume III of The Baroque Cycle — Odalisque.  I’m just wondering why the paperback of Volume III is now called Odalisque instead of The System of the World???

Upon browsing the rows of shelves in Book Sale at SM San Lazaro, I chanced upon a hardback entitled The Crimson Petal and the White with a nice cover art, which just screams Victorian, with an equally attractive price of P38.  Surely, a price you cannot refuse.

Upon reaching home, I immediately googled the author, Michel Faber, and I could say that I’m quite happy with the results.  Here’s a nice profile from Bookreporter.com:

Michel Faber’s work has been described as a combination of Roald Dahl and Franz Kafka, as Somerset Maugham shacking up with Ian McEwan.
